Husky Howl – 2016

New Calendar
JCC's summer started on May 21 and continues all the way until the first day of the new school year, which is September 6th.  This will have been one of the longest summer vacations in recent memory.  We hope all of our families have enjoyed the extra time together.  As we start the new school year, we return to starting school in early September and ending classes in early June (to be exact, the last day of classes will be June 2nd, 2017.)

Construction Projects
Over the summer, all of our custodians will be working on thoroughly cleaning all rooms and waxing all classroom, hallway, and gym floors in our buildings.

After last summer and fall's security construction projects, we're happy to report we'll only be dealing with small construction projects this summer.  They include repainting all parking stripes in all buildings; replace bathroom sinks and faucets at Riverside; remove asbestos tiles from 2 rooms at Riverside; re-stain all the beams on the exterior of Pleasantview; replace 4 back doors at Pleasatview; begin replacing the exterior windows at Pleasantview; put a new roof over the boiler room and receiving area of the High School; and replace all of the old exit lights and exterior floodlights in the 1980 portion of the High School.

New Faces
We are proud to announce we have hired 11 new teachers to replace those that have retired or moved on to other jobs.

New staff to Riverside Elementary School are Preschool teachers Molly Streightiff and LuAnn Peterson.  Ms. Streightiff is a University of Wisconsin-River Falls graduate from Hayfield, Minnesota.  Mrs. Peterson is a Trimont native and comes to us from MCW.  Riverside has two new Reading Teachers in Cassie Hoffman and Brooke Hanson.  Mrs. Hoffman is a JCC graduate who is moving back from Harrisburg, South Dakota.  Mrs. Hanson lives in Spirit Lake and comes to us from teaching in Ruthven, Iowa.  Riverside also has a new 5th Grade teacher in Lydia Wallert.  Ms. Wallert is a Mountain Lake native and comes from Southwest Minnesota State University.

JCC Middle School also has several new teachers.  Alyssa Kruger is the new 7th-8th Grade English teacher.  Ms. Kruger is a Heron Lake native and graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University.  She student-taught last year at JCC Middle School and substituted there most of the spring.  Mariah Benn is the new 7th Grade Social Studies and Electives teacher.  She is a Gustavus Adolphus College graduate and native of Clearwater, Minnesota.  Sherburn native, Bart Musser is the new 6th Grade Minnesota History Teacher.  Most kids will recognize Mr. Musser, as he was a substitute teacher throughout last year in all four buildings.

Both JCC Middle School and JCC High School will share two new teachers this year.  Kate Anderson, a JCC graduate, will be our new Agriculture teacher and FFA assistant advisor.  Mason Meyer is our new Choir Director.  He comes to us from the University of Northern Iowa and he has local ties to the area, as his mother lives in Jackson.

All four of our building will be sharing the services of our new Educational Psychologist, Kayla DeJong.  Ms. DeJong works for the SW Service Cooperative and will be based at JCC.

Technology Updates
This past year we were able to finish our five-year plan to roll-out our 1:1 iPad Initiative to all K-12 students and staff.  This coming year, we move into the next phase of the plan which is to replace the first group of aging iPads.  So this fall, students in 5th Grade and 9th Grade will be given brand-new iPads.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!  Keep watching your mailbox and your email for beginning -of-the-year announcements and back-to-school nights and registration days.  Remember, the first day of school this fall is Tuesday, September 6th.  We'll see you then!
